The Missouri Aeronautical Society was founded by James Bemis and Albert Lambert in November 1916 for the express purpose of training balloon pilots as "cadre' of a newly proposed Balloon Corps. The allies and enemy were already making extensive use of balloons on the battle lines in France. The training of balloon observers was one of the first priorities when America entered the war. Since St.Louis had one of the most active and experienced balloon clubs (The St.Louis Aeronautical Society), the Army let it be known that help was needed. A close-knit group contracted to do the training at the rate of $100 per flight (not less than one hour). Some of the following members made more than 300 gas balloon flights in the following year and trained as many as 300 students. The original member instructors were: |

Ft.Omaha, Nebraska, was reopened by C.de.F.CHANDLER in Nov.1916. War was declared G Apr.1917, and the ground crews arrived for training about 10 May.
